FCAN Webinar: Thankful4Pell: The Past, Present, and Future of Need-Based Aid

November 15, 2018
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Florida is home to the third highest proportion of FAFSA filers eligible for federal Pell Grants. During the 2016-17 academic year, Florida students attending public technical college, Florida College System, and State University System institutions received a combined $1.2 billion in these grants.

Register here to join Amy Bolick, FCAN’s community engagement and programs manager, to learn more about the past, present, and future of the Pell Grant, and what that means for Florida students.

Amy will be joined by Daniel Barkowitz, assistant vice president for financial aid and veterans affairs at Valencia College and president-elect of the Florida Association of School Financial Aid Administrators (FASFAA). Daniel, a financial aid professional with nearly three decades of experience in the field, will provide an overview of how we got the Pell Grant and the strategies institutions can employ to ensure that students who require need-based aid will receive it.

Amy will also be joined by Carrie Warick, NCAN's director of policy and advocacy. Every November, NCAN coordinates a nationwide Thankful4Pell campaign to highlight the impact of Pell across the country. Carrie will discuss NCAN’s 2018 campaign (which will be held Nov. 14-16) and the steps college access advocates can take to ensure Pell is protected and strengthened.

In this session, attendees will learn:

  • How the Pell Grant’s history has impacted the current format of need-based aid and how that history affects today’s students.
  • How institutions’ financial aid policies can help more students access need-based aid.
  • What steps college access professionals can take to ensure the continued success and strengthening of the Pell Grant program
