Creating Conversations: The New Congress and Our Students

Public Briefing for Capitol Hill Staff / 4pm - 5pm / Rayburn 2261

This briefing will join together NCAN members, their students, and Capitol Hill staff. Attendees will learn why NCAN is focused on two top federal policy priorities to best serve our students: Fixing FAFSA and Restoring the Pell Grant. During this session, four college students will discuss their pathways to higher education, including challenges with the FAFSA and the search for an affordable college.  This event will be a great opportunity to hear from students and mingle our college access practitioners and students from 40 organizations in 25 states.

The 116th Congress will include more than 100 new members: 10 new senators and 101 new representatives. This event is an opportunity for NCAN members to meet their newly elected officials and expand their student-led advocacy work.

Tentative Agenda | Travel Logistics

Participating members and students will:
*Hear from Congressional staff working on education.
*Learn how to tell an impactful story to elected officials.
*Discuss key topics facing our field such as free college.
*Meet with their elected officials and staff during a public event and individual meetings.

Goals of this convening:
*Expand the number of NCAN members participating in advocacy.
*Include students in the advocacy process.
*Educate new members of Congress and new staff members on college access and success policy issues.

Travel Stipends

NCAN received unprecedented demand for travel stipends and was not able to provide all members with funds; therefore, any individuals registering Dec. 19 or later will not be considered for travel stipends. The event remains free of charge to all members who would like to participate and are able to cover their own travel to Washington, DC.
