Responsibilities:

COLLEGE FORWARDStaff Position: College Persistence Program ManagerDirectly manage the organization’s rapidly-expanding college persistence initiatives for more than 700 students, ages 18-24, who are enrolled or working to enroll at colleges and universities across Texas and the nation. The organization provides services year-round. The College Persistence Program Manager will supervise and be supported by 8 full-time AmeriCorps members, who provide direct services to students enrolled in the program. This position requires a baccalaureate degree with a minimum of two years of successful related supervisory experience. Previous non-profit experience, AmeriCorps experience, and Spanish fluency are strongly preferred. Knowledge of college persistence programming and/or strategies, mastery of Microsoft Excel for programmatic data tracking, and knowledge of Naviance college counseling software are pluses.

Higher Education Readiness Opportunity (HERO) AdvisorDepartment: School Programs

Summary of Major Duties:
The Higher Education Readiness Opportunity (HERO) Advisor will work in a collaborative manner with the High and Middle School principals, school counselors, and with the staff of the College Success Foundation office in the District of Columbia. The HERO Advisor will work with school staff to identify potential students and recruit young men of color from partner CSF-DC high schools and feeder middle schools to receive targeted support designed to increase academic attainment and college going rates. The Advisor will partner with community organizations and the high school and middle school collaboratives to provide program support, mentorship, and leadership development.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work with high school and middle school principals, staff and local community to recruit students, grade 7-10, who meet the HERO Initiative criteria to participate in academic and college preparation program support in their middle school and early high school years. Work with principals, staff and local community to develop a pool of informal mentors trained to work with program participants.
- HERO advisors will work with 20 students per grade level and serve two high schools & their feeder middle schools.
- Effectively deliver the HERO curriculum as an elective course in a classroom setting to HERO program participants and other College Bound students.
- Track student’s attendance, participation and progress in HERO classes.
- Work with students, parents and school staff to identify student academic needs in an effort to be fully prepared to enroll in four-year colleges upon graduation from high school.
- Collaborate with staff, the high school and middle school collaboratives, higher education community and community organizations to provide access to extended day and out-ofschool time opportunities for program participants.
- Collaborate with the high school and middle school collaboratives, community organizations to provide counseling support, academic advising/coaching/planning, mentoring, leadership development, social and cultural development and peer group activities.
- Provide outreach programs including speaker series/videos, workshops on a range of academic, social and college planning topics for participants.
- Provide college awareness through campus visits for participants and their parents or guardians.
- Ensure that all participants are meeting their program commitments.
- Be knowledgeable of all scholarship and mentoring information distributed by the Foundation staff. Disseminate appropriate information to all participants, mentors, and school staff in a timely fashion.
- Provide early outreach activities, college awareness and college preparation information to non-program participants, grades 8-10 for high schools and feeder middle schools.
- Submit required reports to School Programs Manager.
- Keep complete and accurate files/records on community volunteers and the HERO program participants. Transmit such information as appropriate.
- Be an advocate for the HERO program, the high schools, middle schools and the Foundation by attending community functions and programs that will enhance the visibility of the programs and ultimately help more young people succeed in high school and eventually complete four-year college degrees.
- Attend all Foundation events at the high schools and middle schools involving potential applicants, selected scholarship recipients and mentors. Attend other events, at the Foundation or other organizations, such as training and workshops as required.
- Meet with HERO program participants to assist with the college planning process. This may involve group training/information sessions.
- Resolve conflicts or difficult issues between community volunteers, staff and HERO program participants and assess participation as appropriate.
- Work with high school and middle school principals and staff to assist in the assessment of HERO program participant needs for special assistance, such as tutors, to enhance the academic success of all HERO participants at AHS.
- With high school and middle school concurrence and funds permitting, develop summer session tutor programs for HERO participants in need of such help to further improve their academic success.
Requirements:
- Must be positive, outgoing, personable and able to relate well with diverse populations and age groups, with particular emphasis on working with young people, ages 12 – 19.
- Evidence of being a “self-starter”, able to work independently while observing and complying with all standards of the DC College Success Foundation and related programs.
- Must have an established commitment to work collaboratively and harmoniously with the AHS and middle school staff, colleagues, community resource persons and the Foundation home office staff. Creativity, human relations skills, and problem solving ability are essential to a team approach to organizational goal attainment.
- Must have strong organizational skills and ability to handle a variety of tasks and projects on an ongoing basis, including meetings with students, school and Foundation staff and community resource persons.
- Must have commitment to live within commuting distance of the AHS (located in Wards 7 & 8 of the District) and have a reliable automobile available at all times. Familiarity with the communities served by the high schools and middle schools, and recent effective involvement with students in those school communities is also preferred.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products is preferred.
Qualifications:
A baccalaureate degree
Three to five years experience in fields related to mentoring, leadership development; youth development, teaching or counseling (additional years of education in the above fields may be considered as the equivalent of a part of the required years of experience).
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a 12-month position working with two Achievers High Schools and their feeder middle schools, based at an Achievers High School with infrequent travel to conferences, meetings and Foundation events. The placement of the salary will be based on the applicant’s education level, experience and other attributes. The District of Columbia College Success Foundation offers outstanding benefits including medical, dental and vision for employees; a generous retirement contribution; holiday pay, three weeks of vacation for the first five years of employment and four weeks of vacation thereafter.
